B-BBEE Part 3

Practical tips regarding B-BBEE certification

If you are not able to make use of a BBBEE affidavit anymore as you have now outgrown the turnover thresholds, you must start spending money on implementing BBBEE and getting a BBBEE certificate.

To ensure that the cost of BBBEE is contained within a reasonable budget, we need to get practical about it, but most of all, you need to GET STARTED! As the saying goes, time is money…

So what are we saying about the planning and timing of BBBEE?

  1. The year of measurement is 12 months, and if you take longer to implement, your cashflow will be under pressure later in the year
  2. Staff salaries for skills development will count towards BEE spent, thus if a learner is on training for a longer period, his salary counts more towards your spend
  3. If something goes wrong during the year, you have time to still adjust or fix it
  4. If you start earlier, your documentation will be sorted out before yearend, causing you to go for verification earlier

As you can see, if you start sooner, you can stress less.

What generic tips can make your life easier?

  1. Train your own staff. For three main reasons:
    1. You can claim their salaries as well as the training cost (you ALREADY pay the salaries)
    2. It buys a bit of loyalty and improved skills levels internally
    3. You have better control over attendance and reporting from the training provider
  2. Select a BBBEE consultant with the same value system as yours
  3. A BEE certificate is signed off by an accredited agency (auditor). Select the correct one.
  4. Track your procurement actively
  5. Work with Enterprise Development where you can migrate them to a supplier later
